Tiki, our classroom bird

Yesterday Tiki died, our pet finch.  He sang to us every day.  He loved the kids and the louder they got, the louder he would sing.  We processed grief and loss and sadness and joy and love.

Today one student had an idea.
"Chris, put a square of hot glue on a piece of paper.  Then put one of his feathers in the hot glue.  Put
another square of hot glue on top.  When it dries, pull it off and you can remember Tiki.  Then write a poem about him and put the two together."
"What if you write me a poem about Tiki."
Smiling, "I think I will do that."

"My mom wants to paint a picture of Tiki.  Do you have a picture of him?"
"I don't have any pictures of him. I never took one."
"Where is he now?"
"I put him in the freezer because the ground was too frozen to bury him last night."
"Take a picture of him even if he is dead so my mom will know the colors"

Reasons why I love first grade.
